Starting as an administrative resident at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, John entered the health care industry in 1972 with a keen business sense, high energy, and affable style that would serve him well throughout his career.

In 1982, when John was named president of Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, the hospital was at a crossroads. With a vision and in collaboration with physicians, trustees, employees, and community leaders, John quickly set the hospital on a track to success unsurpassed in the region. Today, Jersey Shore University Medical Center is one of the leading independent academic medical centers in New Jersey, home to such advanced services as cardiac surgery, regional trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and first state-designated children’s hospital in the region.

In January 1997, as the nation’s health care system underwent dramatic changes, John led the merger of Jersey Shore with two other highly respected community hospitals – Ocean Medical Center in Brick and Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, to create Meridian Health. Together with the Meridian Partner Companies, Meridian has established itself as the most comprehensive health care provider in the state.

Under John’s leadership Meridian Health has grown and evolved into a nationally recognized health care leader, with a special focus on clinical quality, nursing excellence, and innovative technology applications. Most recently, the medical centers of Meridian Health were rated by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services among the best hospitals in the state for clinical quality, with Meridian ranking among the top three health systems in New Jersey.

In 1998, Meridian Health was the first health care system in the nation to receive the prestigious Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence at each of its hospitals. Meridian has been named one of the top 100 “Most Wired” health systems in the U.S. for over eight years; one of the “Best Places to Work in New Jersey;” and in 2005, was one of only three health care organizations in the nation to receive the prestigious John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality, a national award bestowed by the Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum.

John’s health care and business expertise have been put to good use beyond Meridian as well, with John serving as chairman of the New Jersey Hospital Association, as well holding board and leadership positions at such organizations as the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals, American Hospital Association, American College of Healthcare Executives, and QualCare. In January 2009, John was recognized by the New Jersey Hospital Association as its Healthcare Professional of the Year.
