William A. “Bill” McDonald was named Interim Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, the flagship of the St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, Inc. in May 2004.  He was subsequently named President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, Inc. on September 15, 2006 and brings more than 20 years of expertise in executive level healthcare management to his position at St. Joseph’s.  

Mr. McDonald received his undergraduate degree in Administration of Justice/Criminology from the University of Pittsburgh and his Masters in Healthcare Administration from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas.

His background includes various hospital CEO positions such as in a thirteen hospital system in Oklahoma organized around a clinical integrated model as well as CEO positions in major healthcare organizations such as Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas, Miami Children’s Hospital, Miami, FL, and the University of Texas Medical Schools Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

Understanding St. Joseph’s ability to contribute to the global delivery of educational and clinical telemedicine services, Mr. McDonald has fostered innovative partnerships with Medical Missions for Children, located on St. Joseph’s Paterson campus, and clinical collaborations with tier one facilities such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  With basic facilities improvements conducted during the first four years of Mr. McDonald’s tenure, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System is investing $250 million in major renovation and expansion projects to meet the growing demand for inpatient and outpatient services at both hospital campuses.

He currently is chair of the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals and participates in many activities including those influencing the charity care needs of the community in New Jersey.

Mr. McDonald was recently honored by Operation Link-Up, an organization dedicated to guiding Paterson teens to focus on life goals while advancing their education.
