Christopher Olivia, M.D.*

Christopher T. Olivia, M.D. is an experienced physician and executive. He has managed health insurance companies, hospitals, healthcare facilities and physician practices. Dr. Olivia was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of The Cooper Health System in November 2002, having previously served as Acting CEO and, before that, President of The Cooper Physician Association. Prior to coming to Cooper, he was the Senior Vice President/Chief Medical Officer of Mercy Health Partners and President/Chief Executive Officer of Covenant Health. In this role, Doctor Olivia managed hospital operations, outpatient business and the for-profit subsidiaries of this six-facility system based in central Ohio. He led the turnaround effort of these facilities and the successful startup of numerous hospital product lines and independent businesses. Mercy Health Partners ultimately became solidly profitable by the time of his departure.

Prior to this, Dr. Olivia was employed at Health Care Plan in Buffalo, New York. He came to Health Care Plan as a practicing ophthalmologist in private practice in Western New York. He was a leader in the plan-wide utilization efforts, a specialty services director for the Health Care Plan network insurance product and led the physician practice staff model divesture from the insurance company in 1996. Dr. Olivia has extensive experience as a founder and board member of start up companies in the health care field, with an emphasis on the information technology sector. Most recently, he was a board member of the venture capital-backed Killdara Corporation of Ottawa, Canada. Killdara is a technology leader in the area of open systems connectivity and Web services. The company was sold to Enleague, a Coca-Cola affiliate, in 2003.

Dr. Olivia holds a Bachelor degree in Science and Premed from The Pennsylvania State University, a Medical degree from Hahnemann Medical School and a Masters in Business Administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his medical internship at Morristown Memorial/Columbia University and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Buffalo, the State University of New York.

 

 

Andrew R. Greene*

Andrew R. Greene is the Chief Executive Officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network. He is the only CEO the network has had. Beginning in 1995, the Network has become the only clinically integrated health delivery Network in New Jersey. It currently comprises a group of eight hospitals in central New Jersey, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, four health centers, and the state's largest elder care provider. He has led the clinical integration and outcomes improvement process in the Network since 1997 and the implementation of the 15/30 Emergency Room Guarantee Program in 1998, among other programs that have improved health care in central New Jersey. He was previously Vice President and Treasurer of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (not affiliated with the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network), based in Princeton, New Jersey. In that position, Greene was responsible for financial monitoring of all grants, tax matters and administrative functions. The nation’s largest health care philanthropic organization, the Robert Wood Jonhnson Founcation makesgrants of $500 million per year.

A graduate of Ohio State University, with a master’s degree in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, Greene was assistant to the President at the Health and Hospitals Corporation in New York City and Program Planning Specialist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, prior to joining the Foundation in 1981. He is on the Board of national, regional and municipal health organizations, as well as an Associate Professor at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is a contributing author of the book entitled, Under the Safety Net: The Health and Social Welfare of the Homeless in the United States, and his published work has appeared in The Journal of Ambulatory Care Management and the Johns Hopkins Journal of The International Society for Research in Healthcare Financial Management Symposium and Workshop 2000.

 

Joseph A. Trunfio, Ph.D.*

Joseph A. Trunfio, Ph.D., is President & Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Health System, which includes Morristown Memorial Hospital, Overlook Hospital in Summit, Mountainside Hospital in Montclair/Glen Ridge and affiliate Newton Memorial Hospital. Atlantic Health System, one of the largest health care systems in the state, serves nearly 5 million people in 11 counties in northern and central New Jersey. Previously, Mr. Trunfio had served as Atlantic Health System’s Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer since March 1999. Before joining Atlantic Health System, he was President/Chief Executive Officer of the Via Caritas Health System based in Parsippany. He assumed that role in March 1997 with the formation of Via Caritas, the parent corporation which sponsored St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center in Paterson, St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic, and Northwest Covenant Medical Center. Prior to this, he had served as President/CEO of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother (SSM) Health Care Ministry Corporation, and President/CEO of Northwest Covenant Medical Center, having joined the SSM system in 1975. Mr. Trunfio earned both a Master of Science degree and a doctorate degree in clinical psychology at the University of Miami, and has completed post doctoral fellowships at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (New York, NY), and the National Institute of Mental Health (Rockville, Maryland). He completed his undergraduate work in psychology at St. John’s University in Queens.

 

John K. Lloyd, FACHE*

John K. Lloyd has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Meridian Health System since 1997. He is responsible for the overall direction and management of the System and its affiliates, and is an ex-officio member of the Board. Previously, Mr. Lloyd was President and Chief Executive Officer of Jersey Shore Medical Center where he served in that capacity since 1982. From 1972 through 1982, Mr. Lloyd was associated with Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, where he rose from the position of Administrative Resident to Executive Vice President. From 1968 to 1971, he served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Lloyd received a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1968 and a master’s degree in business administration from Temple University in 1973.

Mr. Lloyd is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He was also a member of its Committee on Ethics from 1986 to 1989. He served as Regent for Southern New Jersey from 1992 to 1997. Mr. Lloyd served on the New Jersey Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees from 1986 until 1993 and again from 1998 until the present. He is currently the Chairman of the New Jersey Hospital Association. He is a former chairman and member of the Board of Trustees of University Health System of New Jersey and has served as chairman of Monmouth-Ocean Hospital Service Corporation from 1989 to 1995. Mr. Lloyd also served on the following boards: Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross (1992 to 1996); Central Jersey Blood Center (1983 to present) and is currently Chairman; and Monmouth County Tuberculosis Control Board (1982 to 1990). His other memberships include School of Business Administration Advisory Council for Monmouth College (1985 to 1994); Health Care Management Advisory Board for Monmouth University (1999 to present); Board of Directors of QualCare (1993 to present).

He was 1993 recipient of Monmouth Council of Boy Scouts Joshua Huddy Distinguished Citizen Award; The 1996 recipient of the Brotherhood/Sisterhood Award by the Monmouth Ocean Chapter of the National Conference; the 1999 recipient of the Monmouth County Urban League Corporate Award for Strong Community Support and Leadership, the 1999 recipient of the Lakewood Chapter of the NAACP Community Service Award, and the 2001 Honoree, The Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College, Testimonial Dinner and Journal Tribute.

Bruce C. Vladeck, PhD*
President
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

Bruce C. Vladeck was a Principal with Ernst & Young’s Health Sciences Advisory Services. He was Senior Health Policy Advisor and the East Coast Director for the firm’s Academic Medical Center (AMC) service line. Dr. Vladeck was focused on the development and delivery of services to assist AMCs with complex issues related to clinical and enterprise risk management, compliance, finance, and capital planning.

Prior to joining E&Y, Dr. Vladeck was Professor of Health Policy and Geriatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is a member of the New York City Board of Health, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Primary Care Development Corporation, a Trustee of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, and a member of the Editorial Board of Health Affairs..

From 1993 through 1997, Dr. Vladeck was Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). In that position, he directed the Medicare and Medicaid programs, providing health insurance to more than 65 million Americans with combined annual expenditures of more than $300 billion. Subsequent to his service at HCFA, Dr. Vladeck was appointed by President Clinton to the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare.

Before joining the federal government, Dr. Vladeck served ten years as President of the United Hospital Fund of New York. He also held positions on the faculty of Columbia University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; from 1979 through 1982 he was Assistant Commissioner of the New Jersey State Department of Health.

At the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, to which he was elected in 1986, Dr. Vladeck chaired the Committee on Health Care for Homeless People. Among many other honors and awards, Dr. Vladeck received the 1995 National Public Service Award and the 2005 Robert M. Ball Award of the National Academy of Social Insurance.

Dr. Vladeck has published widely, perhaps most notably his book, Unloving Care: The Nursing Home Tragedy (Basic Books: 1980). He received his BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard College; and an MA and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan.

 

Darlene Cox

Darlene L. Cox, MS, RN,   is President and Chief Executive Officer of The University Hospital, the principle teaching hospital of UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School.

A seasoned, energetic health care executive, Ms. Cox is the former President and CEO of Essex Valley Health Care (East Orange General Hospital) and most recently served as an executive healthcare consultant, providing health care management and planning services to a variety of clients nationwide. Prior to Essex Valley Health Care, she served as Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

No stranger to University Hospital and the Newark community, Ms. Cox was Chief Nurse and Administrator of Patient Care Services at University Hospital from 1986-1994. During her tenure at UH, she took a one-year leave of absence to join the highly prestigious White House Fellows program where she worked on health care policy issues. She returned to UH with a new perspective on leadership as well as a strict adherence to sound fiscal policy.

From the bedside as a staff nurse, to the boardroom, to the White House and back, Ms. Cox has thrived in leadership roles in large institutions and smaller organizations alike. She brings with her a distinguished career as well as the combined perspectives of a caregiver, business administrator and adept negotiator - a unique fit for UH and its mission of excellence in patient care, education, research and unity service.
 

William McDonald*
Interim Chief Executive Officer
St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center

William A. "Bill" McDonald was appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, a member of the St. Joseph's Healthcare System, in May 2004.   Seven months later, Mr. McDonald was named Interim Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph's Healthcare System.

Mr. McDonald brings more than 20 years of expertise in executive level healthcare management to his position at St. Joseph's Healthcare System.   His background includes hospital and network administration, management and administration, physician recruitment and retention, development of physician/hospital organizations, third party payer contract development and negotiations as well as program, services, facility development and management consulting.

Mr. McDonald is senior vice president of The Hunter Group, a unit of Navigant Consulting.   He has served in a number of interim management roles for The Hunter Group.   Mr. McDonald is the former president and CEO of Miami Children's Hospital in Florida, a pediatric teaching hospital where he was instrumental in developing an alliance with the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital.   In addition, he has served as chief executive officer of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and other hospital and healthcare systems in Illinois, Oklahoma, Arkansas and California.

Founded in 1867, St. Joseph's Hospital has grown in size and scope of service to encompass St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital,

Jeffrey C. Goodwin

Jeffrey C. Goodwin is President and CEO of Warren Hospital, a 214-bed community hospital in Phillipsburg, NJ

Since assuming the presidency in 1997, Mr. Goodwin has overseen a number of major changes at Warren Hospital including renovations, expansions and new construction.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Goodwin was Warren Hospital's vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Before joining Warren Hospital in 1984, he was finance director at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Mr. Goodwin received both his undergraduate and master's of business administration degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

 

Steven G. Littleson

Meridian Hospitals Corporation
Jersey Shore Medical Center

Mr. Littleson, age 42, has been the President of Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune New Jersey since December 1997. He has administrative responsibility for this 500-bed community teaching hospital, part of Meridian Health System, along with system-wide responsibilities for several clinical departments and product lines.

Prior to joining Meridian, Mr. Littleson was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin, NJ since 1991. During his tenure, the SOCH campus more than doubled in size with many new programs and services for the community while the Hospital maintained it's position as one of the lowest cost hospitals in the State.

Before coming to New Jersey, Mr. Littleson was Vice President at Sentara Hampton General Hospital in Hampton, Virginia and was previously an administrative resident at York Hospital, York, Pennsylvania. Mr. Littleson has a Masters of Health Services Administration from The George Washington University, Washington, DC and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Littleson is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has been active in the New Jersey Hospital Association and has served on the boards of numerous community organizations including The Boy Scouts of America, United Way, Rotary International and the American Red Cross.

 

Kenneth Bateman
President & Chief Executive Officer
Somerset Medical Center

Mr. Bateman began his career at Somerset Medical Center in 2000 as vice president of financial operations and was subsequently promoted to his current position. Prior to joining the medical center, Mr. Bateman spent nearly 20 years in the health care industry, serving in a variety of capacities at acute care and rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes and psychiatric facilities. He most recently served as director of finance at the Edison-based Solaris Health System, which includes JFK Medical Center and Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center. He was also the former chief financial officer at Preferred Behavioral Health in Lakewood, and was assistant vice president of finance at Kimball Medical Center, also in Lakewood. He previously was an audit manager at KPMG Peat Marwick, Short Hills.

Mr. Bateman holds a bachelor's degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange. He is a member of the New Jersey State Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Hospital Financial Management Association.

 

Christy Stephenson

Christy Stephenson is the Chief Executive Officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton in Hamilton, New Jersey. RWJUH at Hamilton is a vertically and horizontally integrated healthcare organization consisting of an acute-care hospital, a medical adult day center, child day care centers, ambulatory care center, home care, physician practices and a management service organization.

Ms. Stephenson started her career as a Registered Nurse working as a staff nurse and later in management positions within Nursing. After starting a Hospice in Manhattan, Kansas she returned to college for a business education. She joined Robert Wood Johnson University at Hamilton as the Director of Planning in 1989 and advanced to Vice President of Operations in 1992, with responsibilities for patient care and support areas and the Lakeview Child Centers. In 1995, Ms. Stephenson joined Curative Health Services as Regional Director for Operations responsible for a multi-site network of Wound Care Centers affiliated with fifteen hospital partners throughout New Jersey and New York. In 1998, she returned to RWJUH at Hamilton as the Chief Administrative Officer and later moved to Chief Executive Officer.

Ms. Stephenson received an MBA in Health Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, a BS in Business and Liberal Studies from Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ, and an RN degree from the Borgess School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, MI.

Ms. Stephenson serves on the Board of the American Heart Association - Central New Jersey, the Mercer County Chamber of Commerce and on the Hamilton Partnership. She was appointed by Mercer County Executive Bob Prunetti and served on the Science and Technology High School Blue Ribbon Commission. Ms. Stephenson is the 2001 recipient of the Princeton Area YWCA's "Tribute to Women and Industry Award." Ms. Stephenson has also received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Rider University in 2000.
